To keep things on topic - and in the interest of sharing too much information - most of my public school life was sheer, unadulterated hell. By high school, I was ready to drop out. I really don't know what the big problem was - I was smart, but not a genius; I was not unattractive, but not beautiful - I was just one of those kids who just kind of sucked, for whatever reason, and took hell from others for it.
Fortunately, my (quiet, little, redneck town - okay, city) had a magnet school. I managed to transfer there my junior year, and let me tell you, it changed my life. I found my niche. I also ended up graduating six months early, because I was so fucking burned out at that point I really couldn't take any more. I regret not getting there sooner - I wish I could have taken advantage of the AP classes and whatnot and really done something with my life from an early age.
School shouldn't be about defending yourself against the same asshole bullies who will probably end up being your congressmen 20 years down the road. There has to be some place for future activists to percolate. I'm all for alternative schools.
