Cold turkey about 5 years ago now. Was smoking 2 packs a day and had smoked for over 15 years. Like others have said you just really have to want to quit. And if you do slip then just start over and dont quit quiting.
Its true you have to work around all the mental habits but I can't downplay the physical side. It is a pretty mean monkey on both sides. While I was quiting and had not smoked for a few days my cravings would mellow some. But just taking a single drag off a cig would send my cravings right back to ground zero. You can easily fall right back into old habits. I had once quit for around a year and a half and was back to 2 packs/day within days of bumming a smoke.
Now I do not smoke or have any desire to do such. People can smoke around me and it does not bother me. When I see people smoking now I kind of feel for them and I realize that I am just one drag away from being in the same boat again.
