A couple of pics showing the couple before the sex scene isn't out of place, in my opinion. I spend a lot of money on content, most content goes from clothed to hardcore, and may include some solo shots. If it's done right the progression looks fine.
Some of the content uses described here sound highly lame to me too, I'm just saying some progression is entirely reasonable, and 5 'solo' pics followed by 15 hardcore isn't necessarily bad in itself.

What you describe is exactly how I usually lay out my hardcore sites. Kinda like a little forplay to warm things up
I might even go a bit further than what you describe in some cases...depending on how the content set flows. But, for a hardcore site...I like to at least see the hardcore starting before the end of the first gallery.
Cumshots are another story...no way the poor bastard can cum for 20 or 30 pics! LOL!
