Of course then there was Sally Star, and that hot chick Pixanne who had her own show (I was actually on that one when I was really young...and yes, she was hotter in person).

Now as far as 'cartoon characters' I'm not sure the earliest I remember, but the biggest impression was made by Woody Woodpecker cartoons at the movie theaters when I was a kid.

Most others, like Felix the Cat, had to deal with people being after them, or things that happened to them that they had to overcome. But not Woody. He'd wake up and be thinking "hmm... now who am I going to go out there and screw with today?"

I really liked the pro-active approach he took to life. Might have helped shaped some of my early views on things. ::grin::
