Damn, I do feel for you. We moved a little ways out of Key West to get away from those pseudo-birds. (Okay, and the tourists -- don't get me started on the tourists). They're 'protected' in KW and I think they know it, since they absolutely run wild all over town. Even the large feral cat population there leaves them alone.
