HELP!!!!!

Ok heres the deal, a buddy of mine came over today to try and help me clean up my comp. Long story short:
Hooked up his harddrive to backup my files,folders etc. and was going to reformat my hard drive. Unfortunately it wiped out his harddrive instead. His harddrive had pics/movies of his son and other important things. Is there any way to recover these files and why would it have wiped out his when it was setup as the slave and not the master?
