Being successful at the free site game has a lot of facets. One really big one is variety. Different surfers are enticed to click by different things, and site layout can be a big factor. I suggest that you build a completely unique site for every site you build for one month. If you submit every other day, that will give you 15 completely unique templates. By unique I mean layout, type of graphics, colors, fonts.... really mix things up and push yourself to try new things on every one.
You now have an unlimited number of site layouts, and I have to give Greenguy credit on this because he's the first person I ever saw bring this up....take all those index, main and gallery pages that you now have and use them in different combinations. You might be surprised how one layout might generate a lot of click throughs and sales while others won't, but the only way to learn these things is experimentation.
The biggest danger of templates is submitting a lot of similar sites to the same category and having the surfers think they already looked at one that they haven't.
