I think they are arguably more trouble to use than they are worth for the _probably_ very small advantage they provide. And they won't work with people using secure browsers, I believe.
Now, rel="nofollow" might be more useful. And, considering the rumors flying around about the new google database, rel="nofollow" might become way more popular soon.
Not that rumors are to be taken too seriously.
