If I remember correctly windoze 2000 servers do not defragment in the background and also leave file stubs in the directory (at a disc level) for directories even after deletion. It may be that even if you have deleted all your old stuff if you did not do a complete reformat or a defrag then your new stuff is scattered all over the place. If you did not delete it and you have not a lot of space on your HD then defrag! It may also be that you have a bad sector of disc space that the OS has detected and knows to skip but is not marked as bad in your drive partition table. I was told this would be fixed on later builds of Windoze by microsoft but changed to Eunuchs which cured the problem. I still have a couple of bad patches on my disc (and have had for the last two years) but since they are not growing and Eunuchs handles it well I am leaving well alone. Yes I know i will need a new drive eventually!
