Yup several reasons for the on/off switch as CD34 stated.
My Dell Axiom PDA actually has 3 wireless modes..bluetooth, wi fi and CMDA...and all 3 conflict with each other

One of the biggest reasons for the on/off switch is the wireless uses power, and thus drains your system a little when you are on batteries...why keep the power drain on if you are never using it?
