Try to use lots of actual text,rather than graphical text, in your tours. Give the surfers something to look at while waiting for the pics to load.
Also do any mouseover image loads with a Javascript:interative rather than using preloads. I hate looking at blank pages while waiting for the bells & whistles to get setup.
