Much in the same way that most politicians don't want to deal with certain inner-city issues (because they might get in the unhappy situation of having to admit that IC black people are their own worst enemies, which is totally not PC), politicians also don't want to be on the "push them out" side of any issue dealing with latinos. There are enough legal latino voters that they can put a world of hurt on any party seen to be hard on latino immigrants.
The size of the protests and stuff is a clear indication that whoever comes down against the latinos are going to suffer greatly. The republicans are looking for a foothold in southern california, and getting all that latino vote on their side would be a big boost - say nothing about the advantages that could be had in south florida if all the illegals could suddenly get paper...
It is truly a dumd as shit situation that would require the majority of americans to stop voting ignorantly down party lines and to vote for whoever is actually going to solve a major, major issue.
