Fences, dogs, guns and what have you will never do any good. They'll cost tax payers a bunch of money but will not really stop people coming in. It's too big an area to cover and they will find a way in.
Coming down on the corporations that are hiring the illegals would cut the amount of jobs going to them and make the USA less inviting. That would have more impact then on a fence but then that would take money away from lobbyist and special interest groups and in return take money away from the crooked politicians.
Companies in the USA hire illegals without ever thinking about it because no one ever gets fined for it. You can't get a job in a DC kitchen unless you speak Spanish because even a great chef has to have helpers and they have to pay legal workers $12 an hour to keep them but can pay illegals a couple of bucks less.
Want to be a forman on a construction site? You better speak 2 languages.
Unfortunately the only long term solution is close the gap between poor in MX and jobs here. The average Mexican is making about $1.30 an hour in Mexico but averages $9.50 here. They average Mexican lives on $5 a day back home and can make that in 30 minutes here.
I say fine the corporations hard for breaking the law. Then take the money earned by those fines and invest in MX infrastructure. When Americans can work construction and stay out of poverty they'll work hard (that means at least $12.50 an hour) but they won't work to stay in poverty at $9 an hour. When Mexicans earn 7 times more here then they can at home they're find a way to be here.
