There are just as many distractions in an office as there are at home.

The real issue is discipline and motivation. If you have these then the distractions are a non-issue. If you don't then it makes no difference where you work.

I have a home office and, a 2 year old and a beautiful wife. Most of the time I leave the door open so that I can be distracted by my little girl, which is a nice little break in the day. If I'm a in crunch I shut the door and that means I love you but I need to focus right now.

When I worked in an office I had people stopping by my desk all the time as well. The morning was spent talking and drinking coffee and when I was in a crunch I would shut the door.
