Along with the previous suggestions, take the time to play with them whether it's a semi-organized game or outside running, swinging, jumping etc. throughout the day. I've found that a half hour of being fully focused on them and playing hard, earns returns in that they are usually ready to watch a cartoon, quietly play toys, or take naps for a nice chunk of time.
Tommy, I keep a very low profile.. as far as other parents know, I do data entry and web design (which is both true) and I leave it at that. Some of my husband's friends know, and that's it. If the kids were grown, I really wouldn't care who knew.
