Ideally you would know your girlfriend well enough, and have listened to her to know already what she would love to receive from you. Do you want to seem thoughtful, or just fulfil your perceived obligations?

However you are a guy, and likely suffering from that chromosone thing some guys get. An all expenses paid trip to Victoria's Secret might do the trick, and be fun for both of you. Certainly good in a pinch.

A good friend of mine does the day spa gift certificate thing. Most women will use it, and it doesn't require him to think too hard. The same guy picks up a case of wine and hands out bottles as xmas gifts to everyone, so keep in mind that he's a little hopeless.
