The original Apple GUI was a direct copy of an experimental system developed by Xerox. Xerox also developed Ethernet. Unfortunately for Xerox their management didn't think that anyone would need PCs and continued to focus on copiers and word processors
They allowed both the GUI interface and Ethernet to become public domain.
