I think Ashcroft is different. He falls into a category of people I like to call "the rulemakers."
People with this perspective love to make rules for everyone else to live by, and they will aggressively enforce what is "right" in the world based on their own limited perceptions.
Many of the "bible-thumpers" fall into this category.
These people are very rigid in their thinking, and extremely intolerant of free-thinkers, or groups that advocate anything out of the norm.
Bottomline: rulemakers are not driven as much by political agenda. In other words, Ashcroft passionately believes in what he's doing, and I doubt he'll back away until he's either kicked out of office, or Bush tells him to cool it.
