I hate the advice "format your PC" though. I've had a bunch of computers over the years and all of them were infected with some shit at one point or another, but I've never ever formatted anything. Simply running a few programs (Spyware S&D, Adaware etc) will take care of 90% of the shit and the rest of the time a few searches online will help you out once you know which processes are running. Sure there may be some particularly nasty rootkits and viruses around, but most of the time spyware is pretty easy to handle. Telling people to format their PC is like telling them Doomsday is here every time they see a popup that shouldn't be there. What they should be told is what programs to install and what to do if their computer is behaving weird. The simple advice "Never use Internet Explorer" is also pretty helpful.
