The FDA's recommendations for sodium intake give you a full teaspoon of salt per day... That's a heck of a lot of salt.

When we actually look at your sodium intake, most of us find that the vast majority of it comes from prepared foods and the like - not from salt used as a seasoning. If you can cut out the foods that have 500mg of sodium per serving, you'll likely see a significant impact - without taking away salt as a seasoning. I recently compared a couple of items at the store. I have no idea what they were ... a sauce, a dressing, maybe a frozen lasagna or some such? One had 50-150mg of sodium, the other 500mg ... these were two different brands of the "same" item.

Depending on your current diet and body, if you watch what you're getting pre-packaged, you may be able to lessen the impact quite a bit.
