I'll give you a little marketing clue and you can draw your own conclusions. Have you ever been to the grocery store and when you turn the corner to go down the next aisle something immediately grabs your eye? That bottle or bag of "whatever" did not grab your attention by chance. It was carefully planned. The same theory applies here. Text loads fast and stands out on a page. Text used in graphics tends to blend into the background and doesn't grab the eye as fast.

Hit em with your best shot as fast as you can and build upon that first impression in the rest of the site. After some trial and error I think you will find more hits to your sponsor and hopefully more sales.
