Having been through one in Ohio when I was a kid, at my grandmothers house which was next to a railroad line, I can say that they are very similar sounds. Winds are 160+ mph, debris flying around, and the little spaces around windows and doors howling and whistling and the low rumble in the background shaking the entire house. Quite memorable, and I believe that tornado was classified as an F3.
My uncle lives in LA -- says that he prefers having an earthquake where there is no warning, as opposed to a week worth of 24x7 TV coverage showcasing a storm that doesn't quite meet the expectations of the weatherman. I can remember two potential storms last year and the weeklong buildup beforehand -- for both to skirt the coast and not even make landfall. The bad part is that people may become complacent and not prepare due to the continual 'boy who cried wolf' syndrome.
Hopefully, we'll have another light season.
