One thing that can cause that is if the movies are in pal format.
Pal is usually 25 frames per second, ntsc (usa) is almost 30 fps.
(even more difference in hd)
Now an annoyance with the internet explorer (perhaps others but not sure) windows media plugin for streaming video online is it calculates length by total frames...though US versions will play the videos in either format, it calculates the length of the stream by frames.(thus it "sees" videos in the pal format as shorter then they actually are)
But once you download it (which you do to your cache when you first play it) windows media player now "knows" it's true length
