Hey Danny,
I doesn't bother me to see free site owners updating/linking their sites for SE purposes. I think it's a good thing. It shows the se's two very important things, new backlinks and page updates.
Maybe if you put the links as the last thing on the page it wouldn't be a problem for other linklist owners. I don't really understand the reasoning behind not allowing that sort of thing.
