1. I submit blogs just like submitting a site. You can search for a blogs directory, whether free submission or with a reciprocal. I always do my submissions manually.

3. Since fresh content is what google likes best. It's good that you do your own write-ups even though the images are not originally yours. What you did with the pics are fine, you can even post a message under each pic saying "Image taken from <site name here> or Source: <site name here>" in that way the image is not clickable and your visitors will stay longer in your site rather than click through the images and spends most of their time reading from other sites.
Just make sure you place a resource or the name of the author when copying some else's original work. You might not know that the image you took has a copyright.

I've experienced submitting subpages after getting my main link (root domain) listed, and some directories approves them. So I get more than one link coming from a directory. But it's not always like that. Most directories disapproves same domain links.
