I gave up on FeedWordPress for the same reasons. You may want to take a look at BlogsAutomater and try out the free version. It doesn't overwrite old posts you've edited and doesn't download anything but new posts in each feed. Most users of BA are looking forward to the next upgrade version (soon please) but it does a good job at what it was built to do.
