I was referring to sanding the walls smooth after filling holes and scratch marks with polyfiller but I have stripped a lot of wood in the past.
If your going to repaint your woodwork you can save time by using a paint stripper, which will take off 2/3 coats of paint per application. You could also use a gas torch, which will burn the paint away in seconds but be careful not to set your house on fire

I've used both of the above in the past because it makes the job a lot faster and easier and you can strip a whole house in a couple of days. Try asking at your your local hardware store for paint stripper. They should be able to tell you what you need
