A person who has dealt with a lot of shit during his or her life (whether they had the worst of luck or they managed to bring it upon themselves) tends to have a surprisingly strong sense of humor. I don't know if it's an emotional response to the things that have happened, or if it's a survival mechanism that allows a person to get through another day, but it's not uncommon in those who have struggled.

That's probably why you see that in homeless people. Life is fucked, they own nothing in a society where people are most often judged by the car they drive, the objects they own, they're sleeping under a blanket of piss-smelling newspapers and they get robbed of the few bucks they manage to find. The only options are to laugh or find a tall bridge.
