They actually do quite well with the search engines because of all the different submissions acting as spider food. (Search engine spiders, that is, like GoogleBot.)
And since all I do is set up the directory script and process submissions, I pull in SE traffic with very little effort. It's not the most productive traffic, admittedly, but it does convert with dating ads, etc. with enough traffic.
