I can't see why subdomains can't be used for adult websites. I have successfully used them over the past 15 years, mainly as a means of spreading every aspect of a website to the seach engine bots.
As an example, the adult website that I'm presently building for myself, already has the web-bots crawling all over most of the 129 pages (each is encased within a subdomain) which form each niche. I have achieved this in less than 48 hours, which might not mean that much, except that the bots have already seen my pages. I saw this in my AWStats in Cpanel.
I thought about registering 129 domains, but apart from the un-necessary cost, in the end when you look at it in black and white - all the search engine bots are looking for are keywords, no matter whether they're contained in a domain name, a page or a sub-domain. Key words are keywords and that is that!
When I build websites for regular genre clients (non-adult), I generally have their websites high up on the first page of Google in their particular area of concentration within 14 days. My record is seven days, but there are and will always be many factors which can stuff my theory up!
At the end of the day Giselle, you need to make your website and its text, keywords and title's html to be as attractive as you possibly can get it to be, to the bots! SEO isn't rocket science - it is just a matter of getting the formula right for the particular website and interest area that it fits into.
I may be a noob in adult websites, but I was building websites back in 1995 and I know that my theory works. It will be interestying to see if it works with an adult content website. Only time will tell.
