But how about getting the thumbs in the database and uploaded to the server and what not. If I had to start the ftp client every time I think it would ruin the fun real quick.

I'm in the process of developing a linklist for myself, it's now nearing completion. At first I was going to create a thumbnailed linklist but decided against it for many of the reason listed above. I had already made the php function though, that could take a random picture from the gallery and crop and resize it, similar to the way arles does it's smart cropping. So it's definitely possible to automate it. I'm not sure how you'd do movie sites though.
