I have about 135 domains, I pretty much quit registering new ones since I realized that I could put as many subfolders as I want under each domain and the SE's still like me.
Now I only grab new ones if I want to jump into a new niche and want keyword related domains.
In theory you really could have many thousands of sites under only one domain, although there are pros and cons to that.
