I guess if you are shooting for mags who require top quality images shot on 35mm, then chrome film is going to be around for a while, although it is getting rather expensive, as you say - I knew a few snappers back home who did shoot digital for mags, mostly advertising though, cars, and interiors, that sort of thing, but they were using medium and large format cameras.
Just about all press photographers have gone digital now, although the images are generally printed on poorer quality paper than mags, so it doesn't really matter weather they were shot on digi or film - the big advantage over film is you can get pictures back to the sub editor faster for deadline.
The Nikon and the Cannon are both great cameras for sure - most of the sports snappers I knew preferred the Cannon, because the auto focus on the bigger lenses was faster than the Nikon's - and they are around 20% cheaper than the Nikon lenses.
