Yup, seems like they've developed a very specific type of affiliate program. Since their proprietary software is rolled into the patent, I think they were wise to protect themselves. I'm not worried, and I don't see any reason for anyone else to be.

Acacia buys patents for the purposes of filing lawsuits and being assholes. These guys seem to have developed a genuinely unique and innovative architecture and they're protecting it. This is the whole purpose behind patenting in the first place, to allow people and companies to protect the fruits of all their hard labor and research/development expense. I say good for them. I'm sure anyone who likes their system enough will be more than welcome to license it.
