You Just Can't Trust Anyone (Rant #1)
Like most of the LL owners here, I've got a mental list of my "trusted" submitters. These are the people who know how to build good, clean sites that don't break the rules, use the right recips, submit to multiple categories, and so on. I rarely, if ever, have to decline a site from one of my "trusted" submitters, and I'm happy to say that I've got a few dozen of them.
This is mainly a note for those of you who are just getting into the LL game...don't EVER fall victim to the temptation to approve without reviewing on these sites. As many of you know, I'm chewing my way through a pretty big backlog right now, so the temptation to just approve the submissions from submitters I know is incredible. I resist the temptation, and today I vindicated myself. For whatever reason, 4 of my trusted submitters have been filling their pages with crap and blind links for the last month while they were submitting and I was AFK. I caught them and declined the sites...but if I'd given in to temptation I would have been listing crap without ever knowing it. Why would someone start using blind links all of a sudden? I don't know, but the best guess I have is that they think we don't watch as closely once we know them. If your LL is new you may not be to the point yet where reviews are a mountain and not a mole hill, and if that's the case just file this thought away for later...the devil on your shoulder will sing eventually |

Good Point.
Month or so ago I got a submission from a friend and well trusted member here and I hit approve as soon as I saw who it was from, but then for whatever reason I looked at the submission and found it was being redirected, (not on purpose) so I saved myself a headache and helped someone who didn't know they had a issue all at once. |

That's an excellent point as well Torn....even the most careful webmasters will sometimes fatfinger some code and cause a problem they're not aware of. I've been bitten in the ass once too often by my own coding, so I'm in the habit of double-checking everything now.

Max/Torn,
I was just going to say on the odd occassion (I speak for myself here only) I am not even aware that I've done something wrong! I certainly agree with you that once I get to the point where I can build freesites in a reasonable amount of time, I too will take on the responsibility of getting my own linklist up and running as well. Judging from conversations I've had via ICQ with the likes of Stu, UW and even MrYum, operating a linklist is no walk in the park. Its as much a priority and a responsibility as well as a privilege. I hope that if ever make a mistake that you let me know.

I can understand the temptation to "auto-accept" certain submitters, esp if I see they post here and whatnot - you don't really expect that they'd be so stupid as to do something really boneheaded like cheat. On the other hand, having been burned too many times in "real" life, I have learned that expectations lead to disappointment. Too bad. When you don't really know someone except on the boards or online, it is easy to form a judgement of character that may be quite off the mark. When they show their true colors it is the same kind of betrayal that you would feel should a friend stab you in the back. A bit melodromatic, but it's true.
I guess this is a bit of a personal rant too, isn't it I don't know why anyone would try to cheat & make enemies in what seems to be a very small world here, but I know people get lazy & make mistakes, too. Every time I read a thread like this it makes me paranoid but at least it makes me more aware of what I'm doing when I build - that's a good thing My LL doesn't bring a mountain, but it's a tad more than a molehill so I am starting to understand all the crap that goes on out there, and I can't imagine getting hundreds of shitty cheating submits and how much of a piss off that must be. If I fuck up, I hope that someone lets me know - some of us are just trying to make an honest (hehe) living here. Whatever you had to get off your chest, thanks for keeping us on our toes MadMax! That blows Max
One would hope that people are smart enough not to bite the hand that feeds them (feeds them traffic in this instance). But apparently that's not always the case. I've been fortunate so far and have only endured the usual cheaters/scammers. Have not yet had someone I trusted intentionally try to assfuck me. That's not to say that sometimes a trusted submitter doesn't make a mistake. When that happens, I contact them and they fix it...and are usually quite appreciative of the information. Thanks for the eye opener Max. Much like some advice from UW several weeks ago, I take this as a heads up to be more vigilant. My list is still on the small'ish side, but it will always be a quality site that lists quality sites. Hang in there Max...hope you don't find anymore nasty surprises in that pile. |

Sometimes we just fuck up too. I did a site that met all the rules for most link lists and forgot to test it in IE. Turns out it was fine in Firefox but a blank page in IE. Thanks to Cleo she sent me an e-mail and I fixed it before most LL owners had a chance to look at it but intentional or not free site creators aren't perfect! ---art

Cocksuckers - every last one of ya!
Back on topic, a little - I've found that even the most experienced submitters occassionaly make errors that make me step back and say 'what the...?'. It hurts a whole lot more when they pull shit like what Max is saying - not mistakes, but intentionally forgetting the rules of the game. It's kind of like finding out that your wife decided to give swallowing a try while sucking off someone else, but never even considered swallowing your load. OK, maybe it's not like that at all, but either way, it hurts.

I agree completely pornrex I'm generally one to try and nurture new submitters and let regular submitters know about honest mistakes. Yesterday I sent out a couple emails to regular submitters because they'd forgotten to link some text that was obviously supposed to be linked (Click Here For...). I know many submitters here have gotten those kinds of emails from me, and I've gotten them from many of the LL owners here I should also say that while I had a really bad day yesterday, I do love running a link list...it's just a ton of work and a chess game with the webmasters who are always trying to push the line as far as they can. |
