Recips, whos responsibility is it ....

to make them look the way the LL owner wants them to look? Just wanting everyones take on this, not wanting to start any problems or make it sound like im complaining.

This week the joyful responsibility of putting recips on our freesites and submitting them has fallen in my lap. Normally I just build the site and do the text then Lliandrin does the rest.

Ive noticed that a large portion of the recips are not coded to look the way the LL owners want them to look, or at least not on all browsers. Most of the time this is due to simple coding errors like missing #'s in font tags, or in the case of one LL <br>'s everywhere which results in his table being about 2x as tall as he wants it to be. (these actually should be <br /> by the way) Lliandrin seems to have a system, or is less picky than I am because Ive been doing recips since about 1:30 and am just now finishing them up (we submit to 66 LL's)

Which brings me to my question, as a LL owner do you count it against your submitters if your recip looks jacked up? Even if they copied and pasted the code exactly as you supplied it?

Now to be clear Im not talking about the layout of the recips as a whole, just your individual recip. Not complaining just wondering, Im sure that for the most part this is caused by WYSIWYG editors which without exception suck terribly.

I think this is a very good question. Some recips just don't work so you have to pull out ol' notepad to fix them.
The main problems I come across are marquees with no width, so you can't read them. Too many <br>'s and code put together without even a thought given(it seems) to proper nesting.
And yes, xhtml will be the new standard, so <br> should be <br />. Same with <img> and others. I just fix them once, add them to my saved recip table and don't worry about it till I change niche. But it is the part I dread,'is this going to work or will I have to spend more time fixing it so I don't get declined for having an improper recip'.
And hey, if anyone wants to trade top listings for properly coded recips, I'm game

If the idiots can't get their own recip right, delete em.. and dont submit to them.

I dont beleive what some of you go thru to satisfy these LLs.. and for what? 10 uniques from so far down the food chain the surfer barely has a hard on!.

If you add some 1000+ characters to your index page, to satisfy these LLs, and they are all linked to someone else... not only does it throw your keyword balance/relevance out.. it passes most benefit from that page to the LLs you submit to, and leaves little for you..

Every stinking little list now has category-specific BS recips. Shit I have seen some that dont even have a fukin 'name', just 6 linked keywords..

IMO They are "stealing" from you... It's YOUR page.. make sure it stays yours.

Category recips are BS and do nothing but steal rank and relevance from YOUR site for theirs.

In SOME cases, there is a case for recip-ing as per their instructions... but that list is very short...

Mine are pretty hard to butcher & I think I have everything hard coded so that it looks the same to everyone.

Of course, every now & the I see sites that look like the webmaster did the old "Select All" then they changed the font color & my link turns purple inside a green table border

For the most part, I think most link list owners know what they are doing when they make the recip tables - hell, I'm even thinking of adjusting all of mine to make them a smaller width so that they will fit into tighter spaces

When in doubt, ask. If no answer, don't submit or put them up the way they are

a small mistake is easy made, i double check and fix them when i put a recip on my sites.no problem with that

I have to agree with DDave - Im in the process of getting rid of the category recips as there has been little (if any) benefit to my LL (and I did them the right way) and a pain in my ass for reviewing.
For LLs that think they need a boost to their cat pages - you are much better getting some good trades from outside and use the recips to just target/brand the site - just my humble opinion

I cannot tell you how very happy i was to read your posts.

Since coming back from my 3 month forced absence, i've been trying to get back in the swing of things. I had some nice tables all premade that i could just "slap" into my sites before submission.

Now i go to these sames sites and they all have "ATTENTION" use our NEW catagory receipts. One even said, if you HAVE to use a general receipt, here it is, but you wont be listed as high/quickly etc. WTF.

and worse (at least for me) i have to NOW decide WHICH catagory i'm submitting to ahead of time. Do i put a voyeur receipt because that is what my sponsors are promoting or do i put uniform because my content is in a merry maid outfit. Before when i could be generic, i'd pick a catagory at submission and if the LL owner thought it was better in another, it could be moved.

Now we are both stuck with whatever my "goodhead" |rasta| thinks it MIGHT be.

Can i still claim
status and say i didn't know when i put her in the wrong cat???? LMAO..

Since I tend to think about SEs quite a bit I realized that Google is looking at these recips and just basically ignoring all of the text - it is a waste of time for both me and my submitters - and the effect from the little gifs I have is so much better for branding and recognition
Of course the effect that it had on the whole LL community with every little LL wanting to get in the action was way out of line with common sense SE positioning - the internal linking you get from these cat recips is totally negated by the text being more than 2 or 3 words - at least thats the effect I saw and I've got a sneaky feeling that Google might actually be filtering the links as junk

I am not sure this thread was actually about category specific links... or about link lists who have a copy and paste for their recip... which has errors.

Regardless of that... I agree with Ghost. There are many link lists who want a specific link up and have the codes all wrong... marquees are stuffed... fonts and colors are all over the place... Breaks are not working... etc

I only submit to 16 lists... I copy the required recip code from each list I intend to submit to.... it takes me a couple of hours to make a site... and then I spend another hour fixing up coding errors from the link list recips.

I dont think its my responsibility... but I do like to be listed with the lists I submit to so i fix up the code and move on!

You guys shouldn't be fixing anyones codes. If you think they look bad move on...or write your own. I prefer clean sites and only ask for my recip if you have recips to others. I offer no recip you need to create one if you feel the need and it can be simple or complex. Just not shitty

No Surfn... As I said I dont submit to many link lists anymore... and if they are willing to list me and send that lovely traffic I am certainly willing to fix their coding.

Its not just the newbie link lists that have bad code that they offer to a submitter to cut and paste.

Ghost wasn't really talking about category specific links, that's a whole other issue.

I do almost all of our recip tables and submitting. Several of the "big" lls as well as smaller lls have their recips completely jacked up. I fix them because I want my page to look good and their coding screws that up. Also quite a few LLs specifically state to not alter their code in any way. I would think that as a LL if you want your exact code used then you could at least take the time to make sure that it's right.
GG your code is great thanks! It's such a simple thing to fix and not that time consuming to make your recips correctly.

As LL owners we want our submittors to do everything correctly, as well we should, I just think that we should do our jobs correctly. It is after all our job.

As I already posted, I don't offer recips...general or niche specific. I prefer clean. I'm in the minority I know this. I feel that webmasters should be working on their sites and not worrying about my recips.



IF you submit to me with a table of recips I do look to see if they are linked correctly.

Surfn, I certainly was not commenting on your site, or your requirements for recips... and it sounds like you have that all in hand

I was commenting on your statement:

Many of the larger link lists have bad coding... and while it isnt the free site submitter's responsibility to fix that code... we will all do it... we want to get listed... plain and simple... but it would be helpful... and save a lot of time if they fixed the code. Probably be better for the link lists as well.

i am easy with my recips on analbitch, they ay pick general linkback or niche its their choise, and most of the time people make their own linkback, as long their is a link back i dont worrie

I like the recips for smut gremlins, GG, Cleo, jays-xxx, hoes.com and links for sex because they are all about the same size and make for neat tables.

There is a little difference but I can change that and no one seems to care so far.

There should be an industry standard on recip sizes :\
