I have a small server here at home with an NTP Server option. What is the advantage of useing that option?

It sets the time on your computer automatically so you don't have to. This is how I do it on all of my computers.

So, besides having to look at my watch once in a while, there is no other advantage?

If the option is for running an NTP (Network Time Protocol) server then you can use it to synchronize the time of all your computers. The main advantage to having every thing in synch is keeping logs accurate and starting automated jobs at the same time.

You'll need to run NTP clients on the other computers and tell them to get the time from your server.

Isn't NTP built in on Windows like it is on Macs?

Maybe as an option
But it's an option on a server I have. I picked up a 1 terabyte server last week to use as a music server Works good with the cd player we bought with a little network built in to play mp3s.

But, we only have about 60 gigs of music so we have a little space to play with

Where is it at?

Yeah on your client you can have XP sinc with a number of them threw out the world. As for a server well. the only thing I have seen it good for is on a local network. IE you want to push out updates and so forth to all the machines at the same time. Other then that, its somewhat useless. You can use the server for so much more. Me personnally depending on what OS it has. If its an MS os I would place WUS on it. You can search it on MS. its free. What it will do is download all of the MS patches and push them out to your home machines. Now that sounds like some overkill. but in fact its not. If you have 4 or 5 machines in your house all going to MS for updates that is going to kill your pipe in the house. But if you have just 1 box getting the updates and then pushing it to your machines that just one box taking down the update. It's basicly windows update in your home. But the Time server would help that. Also can do the same thing with your symantec by placing it on the server and having all your virus defs in a central location and your machines would look to that spot of the defs. anyway going to far with this. good luck on it jim, if its just a file server for streaming music I would not even bother with installing it.
