News WITHOUT a spin
We all know how hard it is to get decent information about current and important events that doesn't dribble out of the mouth of some lobbyist. Surfing around the other day I came across this site:
http://newstandardnews.net/?action=show_homepage An interesting, homespun, slightly populist view of the news with a lot of accurate background info on most stories that only get a small blurb in the mainstream press. Seems like a groundlevel effort. Maybe you like it maybe you don't. Do you have a good source of news and info that IS NOT mainstream and you feel is fairly accurate most of the time? How 'bout posting it here? Happy New Year All! |

I went and looked at that site, and I got a very strong wiff of "liberterian attitude" in there. Most of the articles are very subtly but very slearly anti-bush anti-republican, but written in a way to not make you think they have an opinion.
They have a stand, they are just working hard to not make it as blatant as Rush Limbaugh or Al Franken. I have been using http://news.myway.com and digging down a bit, plus the BBC news site and a couple of others "outside the orbit" of washington. You are correct, too much of the current news is run by the spin doctors and "cycle controllers", but that is what happens when every piece of news is first sterlized, neutralized, and then poked and prodded by a "panel of experts" on the talk shows that pass for news on the Fox News Channel. I find it amazing that from about 6PM until 3 AM, there is little or no news on Fox, and yet it is the most popular news channel. Makes you wonder. Alex |

These days it is... I get a laugh out of seeing even the donuts on foxnews calling him out ever so gently. I have a real feeling that even his own party is getting tired of this endless swamp of difficult military actions, thinly veiled corruption, wishy-washy answers, and month long vacations on the ranch to clear brush. More and more, I see an absentee landlord at work.
However, that being said, there is a difference between reporting "Bush restates military policy" and report-editorializing "Dems call Bush military policy 'bullshit'" or "Reps think Bush "on course for a win" in Iraq" Just choosing who you quote at the top or in the first paragraph can change everything. Too much of the "news" today is dependant on those quotes to make it "sing"... but then it only signs the party lines (which from what I can gather, is often the extremist feelings of less than 10% of the population at either end of the debate). also Google email alerts are VERY GOOD for certain subjects
like set up an alert for a term like "under god" and every morning when you log on your inbox is filled with all sorts of news articles that contain that term

Tommy, I don't think they are going to disappoint you for a while to come either... it looks like the 2006 elections are going to get ugly!
http://reuters.myway.com/article/200...NGRESS-DC.html Major fund raiser and insider nailed bad for a bunch of business deals, some of which involved the government and Republican elected representitives and officials. I can picture him talking his way out of jail pretty easy by disclosing the location of the buried treasures. I read a recent survey that suggested that most people think politicians are corrupt... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10387184/ It's entertaining to watch. ![]() Alex |

So it's pretty obvious that people working "under god" would never allow such things to happen. So mid this year what will the campaign trail use as a slogan?
Will they suddenly find a dead bearded man? Maybe 5 bearded men with nuclear material will be captured? Maybe an invasion of Iran? Something big has to happen in the war on terror since touting 5% uneployment will only go so far and the integrity is falling fast. |

Moby sometimes ya gotta wonder how dumb the people in this country are
5% unemployment ....the economy is doing good because of the bush tax breaks.... yeah right the economy is doing good because of the housing bubble and the housing bubble was created by cheap interest rates the cheap interest rates were created by china pumping money in to american banks because they are swimming in money from our 200 million trade deficit with them right now housing is almost 50% of the G.N.P. everybody is borrowing money and putting in new kitchens, bathrooms, buying cars, furniture, electronics, pools and my favorite paying off their credit cards with their home equity in 3 or 4 years things are gonna get bad

Tommy, you express one of the reasons why I am actually looking at SELLING property rather than buying. There is a really big credit bubble out there, similar in scope to where japan was in the 80s, and the results could be similar if the US is not careful. Already some housing markets are seeing a drop in demand and prices, something that hasn't happened in a long time.
I find that for me, check the news from outside your home country is a good way to get a feel for what is really going on. Less chance of a local bias or filter coming into play. When you see differences, you can ask questions and look further. Alex |
