Domain Name Hunting?

Well I have been hunting one domain name since November. It's my sisters business name. It expired on 12/25/05. So I waited the 30 days hoping the person would not register it. The past two days there is no update on the name with whois from directnic. The name is with godaddy, when I go to their site and look up the whois and then go to see the underlying data it shows and expireation date of 12/25/06 does this mean the person registered the name again? That info was not in there last week. The people are not using the name at all. a wayback look up shows nothing on the site for 2 years, go to the domain now and it's parked. I would like to get the domain, but if I have to contact the people to purchase it that would be cool to. But I don't want to contact them only to have them run and buy it thinking they are going to make a killing on the sale. I thought after 30 days of them not re-registering the name that it would be released to the public. Could I be wrong with that?

You should see this info:

Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 14-jan-2006
Creation Date: 13-jan-2001
Expiration Date: 13-jan-2007

The update date is the date they last made a change or renewed it.
Creation date the date they originally purchased it.
Expiration being when it next expires.
If it now says 12/25/06 I would assume they renewed it but thats just my opinion, see if anyone else can tell you a better way to check it that perhaps I don't know of yet. If it is indeed gone, is there no way to change it slightly to still get what she wants? A hyphen, etc.?

Looks like something just hasn't updated yet unfortunately, because Updated Date: 30-dec-2005 is probably the day they renewed it. Again juggernaut, I am no expert, so many someone else can give you better feedback, but it looks gone to me :-(

Most registrars give you a 30 day leeway after the "expir date" to renew - so they probably did. Otherwise it would go into on-hold status for 5 days (usually) then into the redemption period which is 30 days during which the current owner can still "buy it back" from the registrar at an elevated price. It then goes pending delete for up to 4 days - so all together dependant on the registrar - it wont get released for at least 40 days after the "record" expiration date.

Hey Juggernaut
I've been through this twice with Godaddy, Bob Parsons makes up his own rules, you need to spend $18 to get the domain that's the cost of Godaddy's Monitoring/Backordering and it used to take 3 months (they say it's faster now I don't beleave them). They give the owner 45 days and then they put the domain up for auction and if no one buys it at auction (minimum bid is $18) then you will get it through Monitering/Backordering after another 45 day hold and feel free to email godaddy (to let the reps know Bob Parsons is a crook and a Cock Sucker) every other day while waiting for the name to clear, I did

Looks to me that they renewed the domain on Dec 30, 2005 for another year. They have 30 days after their domain expires to renew it and it looks like they did indeed renew. A lot of people have domains that they buy and just sit there, sometimes because they hope to sell it off someday, sometimes because they have a future project in mind and sometimes they just like the name. I own a lot of domains, can't tell you why I own and keep renewing half of them
