sub domains

Is there some reason places don't like these?
I really like to keep each sponsor sites on sub names to keep it neat and tidy.

Just use directories.

Reasons vary between webmasters. Not all have a problem, but those that do are pretty firmly entrenched in their ideology.

Greenie's advice will give you maximum benefit with the least amount of headache.
