Read an article yesterday on G00gle devaluing exchanged links

I subscribe to the Search Engine News, and read their monthly article on Google where they say in part:

Quote:
A member of Google's Search Quality team recently posted the following link building information in his blog...

Google has tremendously refined its link-weighting algorithms. We have more people working on Google's link-weighting for quality control and to correct issues we find. So nowadays, undermining the PageRank algorithm is likely to result in the loss of the ability of link-selling sites to pass on reputation via links to other sites.
I'm wondering if this is also undermining having a directory, and having every free site link back to your main page, and category page, with links that are identical in nature. It seems like that could be painting as they call it in the article "a big target on your site" that you might be artificially inflating your link pop with reciprocal links.

After reading that, I've decided to remove my category links off my main two link list lists, and provide some general links with different wording, and to invite submitters to invent their own links and own words, so the linking looks less "artifical". What does everyone else think of this in terms of LL and reciprocal links?

That's pretty much the current google theory. Reciprocal links are weak, and too many reciprocal links may suppress a page.

Category links are hurting linklists in google.

What you are doing is probably a good idea.

We're dealing with a new google (well, this has been true for months, so not that new), and adult hasn't yet adapted.

We need a new strategy.

I agree, yet it is hard to change the habits of all the link lists and reciprocal links.

Truthfully, I don't know what a better stratgedy would be...maybe something like have people link to the link list from a hub with a paragraph of these are some good link lists I like, 1, 2, 3 etc. and no recips on free sites. That way, it looks natural...they are commenting about places they like to visit, and not look like they are trying to artifically inflate link pop. Having them submit 50 sites from one domain all with identical links has got to be rasing red flags to google.

I stopped building more than one doorway for my free sites awhile ago and rotate who I submit to, because I figured that was trouble waiting to happen too.

You also dont want to jump on the bandwagon and change your site every time something is in the air.

If we as adult site owners dont get link backs from those that submit to us, how do we get linkbacks? I dont blame G if they did follow that path, it's in their best interests, will help them provide the best results. But who in this biz is going to link to another adult site without getting something in return? I would'nt, it's the only way I'd know I was getting linkbacks. I guess this business is too much about the money? Course thats why we are here..

Seems to me a linkback is a linkback wheither it goes to your catagory page or your root and no matter what the anchor text is. Of course I could be wrong. The best linking would be getting links to your site and none out. Dont see how we can do that.

Google traffic is fine and all, but so is traffic from linkbacks, though there is less of it. If you want google traffic, maybe build a bunch of keyword rich crap sites on a different IP that only link back and are not linked to?
Lotta work for something that may or may not happen, and they'd catch on eventually anyways.
I get a my share of google traffic, but yeah, I want something out of trades and submissions too and I can't see making wm's jump through hoops to give it to me the way google wants it this week. So I'm not changing anything. Yet.

Seems to me the keyword is devalue, not total elimination of all value, I admit I am no SE guru, but I do know that if I changed everything whenever google made an update to their method of madness, or tried to follow every little SE trick I would drive myself crazy, and would end up getting little or no work done other than trying to keep up. I believe that in the long run if you are not intentionally spamming and continue to make good sites with real content you are gonna get your fair share. I think that any adult webmaster should not count on SE's for their traffic because tomorrow it could be all gone if google decides to change the smallest thing. The basics still remain the same, make good sites worth visiting, and trade links with other sites that are similar to your own site.

Of course I could be terribly wrong and the spammers win in the end, but I am betting that cream will make its way to the top.

After giving this a few more minutes of thought, what I said above still stands. But for people who are looking solely at google and SE optimization, I guess the only way around this would be for every link list to have a "sister" site. The sites that get submitted to and listed on site A have recips to site B. The sites that get submitted to and listed on site B have recips to site A.

Of course I am sure they would eventually catch on to that if they wouldnt already, but I guess that would be an idea, kinda like A-B-C link list submissions, haha.

When I first started my link lists, the majority of my traffic was SE traffic. I was really good at getting ranked for the keywords I went after, and had excellent conversions with sponsors. In my heyday I had 7 out of 10 on the first page for one keyword I went for.

I got spoiled. Now Google hates me. Yahoo and MSN I still do good, but you are right. I will probably never get back up like I was in Google, and should stop freaking out over it. Now more of my traffic comes from recip links then SEs, and I should work on that rather than trying to make the SE's happy.

But it is frustrating when I've done nothing black hat or even grey hat for a long time and watch my sites recently get devalued. And have no idea if they will ever get pr again. So now it is old fashioned submit sites, get traffic again.

I don't think I will go back to category recips because I plan on splitting my categories up over time, and I also want to do the same thing to xxxporntastic I did to trc, put all my categories on the base domain on keyword pages.

I'm also going to to change the text for my recips often, so when people grab new recips, I end up with a lot of different keywords pointing to my sites, and not the same anchor text over and over again. But you all are right, I'm never going to get rid of recips entirely, and they do bring a lot of the traffic.

I see so many people change their site around after a big update or big talk going around. Seems to me you change things and make new pages, it's like starting all over again. New pages take time to gain. I'd rather try fixing up the old ones that already have PR, age and linkbacks. Of course sometimes you have to, or it was'nt done right before. I know I wish I'd known then what I know now, but shit happens.

I've pretty much left my stuff as it was and it's almost always come back. Though I've had better, this last month it's starting to come back again, and I dont see myself making any big changes.

I've never asked for category recips, some give them to me anyways when they do custom recips and that's OK, but I don't think I'd want everyone doing it. I think surfers are less likely to bookmark a category page and I have less to sell to them there.

Most of my sales come from category pages.
