Advertising niche on free sites

So I was just building a new toys free site and after I built the main page, I stopped and stepped back after I looked at the advertising I did. The index page has toys ads but I put iPod porn movie ads on the main page leading to the galleries.

I guess my question is this to those who do well with free sites. Is is wise to stick with the same niche for advertising on free sites or can it be refreshing to advertise something completely different on the main page?

Trying to put myself in a surfers mind and am actually REALLY stuck on this.

Its not done yet, got to go to work now, but have a peek and let me know what you think. http://www.ezangels.com/gal/vixensfuckmachines/

I think you will probably get some that say yes try advertising a completely different product and others that will say no.

I would say it's ok to try different ads, even out of niche, but I'm not sure I would run an ipod ad. My thinking is, what if they don' t an ipod? That ad is worthless then and not going to do anything for those surfers. However, what if they do have an ipod and you peaked their interest enough to click?

I have seen others talk about impulse buying... Like when you are checking out at the grocery store, and they have all those other products by the register for you to see. Thinking in this way, I think it's ok to show a different type of ad. Just my 2 cents.

Personally I like to stick to one sponsor only on a freesite. Pick one that matches your content and pimp the hell out of them. Too many choices only confuses the surfer. Early on I tried putting penis pill ads on the bottom of my pages. Never made much money.

Normally I'd advise you to just push the niche of the site, because the traffic coming in form the LL's would be niche specific (so advertise sex toy paysites if you're listed on a sex toy category)

But the iPod angle is a bit different - it's kinda hard to get targeted traffic from Link Lists for mobile porn sites (I think that a few do have categories, but not that many) so it might not hurt to push that angle with one of the ad spots on the pages.

Thanks for the information everyone.

What I might do is remove the iPod pic ad and just stick with a text based one and promote the niche a tad more. I'll see if people even click the text ipod link.
