Windows Internet Explorer and Streaming H.264 movies

Streams perfect and starts playing for me after just a few seconds in Windows FireFox and all Mac browsers using the QuickTime plug-in but for some odd reason Windows IE downloads the whole movie before starting to play it.

This is the test movies.

Is there a setting in IE that can be changed so that IE starts playing the movie before it is fully downloaded?

Hmmmm, I clicked your link and at the bottom left of my screen it said downloading from http://..yada, yada and after about 20 seconds it said done, but no movie...

That's strange...
They play for me but not until all the movie has been downloaded which takes a long time as they are rather large.

I edited the link so that it lists the movies in the directory instead of being a link to one of the movies.

In IE the first gave me a box where I could search on line for a program to open the file, I clicked yes and got this:

I clicked small.mp4 and nothing happened.

With Firefox the ipod.m4v gave me a box where I could browse my own computer to find a program to open it. I don't think I have anything.

I clicked small.mp4 and after a cigarette and 4-5 more minutes I got an icon of a little piece of film with the corner torn off

These movies are mpeg-4 H.264 format so you need QuickTime to view them.

Sounds like you do not have QuickTime installed.

(Actually there are other players besides QuickTime like MPlayer but most users go for QuickTime since that is installed as part of iTunes.)

Yeah that is what they do for me under my XP install in IE but they start playing right away in XP using FireFox.

I was just hoping that someone more Windows savvy would know a setting to change in IE for members that asked about it.

I guess I'll just be telling users to use FireFox for fast play streaming of these movies.

Seems the solution is to embed the movie into a web page.

Works on my end xp using ie7 and no quicktime installed

Just tried viewing the page in my clean install version of XP and it gave me the message that QuickTime was needed so I'm guessing that you have QuickTime installed without knowing it.

I had to go look. I forgot I installed a quicktime alternative that will play the files. The video played in the upper left of the browser window for me. I'll take a screen shot and pm it to you.

No need as I have XP installed, actually four versions.

I'll be embedding them into pages so that everything everything will look good on the actual member's area. Kind of like this but not as fancy.
