Post Dated Affiliate Check

I just received a check in the mail today from Island Dollars with the date March 03, 2008 on it. It's still February, right?

This seems very strange and very wrong to me. This is the first time in 6 yrs seeing this. Has this happened to anyone else???

I cant say that it has here..but I can tell you no matter what the date on the check the person/company that wrote it is responsible should you deposit it. Just because they put a later date on doenst mean you have to wiat until then to do anything on your end.

If you try to deposit it before Monday, and the teller is paying attention at the bank, they'll refuse to accept the check.

Very true Toby and I would not try deposting until Monday.

See when I hear of people post dating a check it is because the money is not there and they are hoping it is by that date. That's what bothers me most. I understand what you are saying NYJester, but if the money is not there it does not matter what date they write. I also get charged from my bank when someone bounces a check to me. I would hate to get hit with a $20 charge for a check that is only $26, LOL

I wanted to see if others have had this with this program or any other. Plus, a rep from them shows up here once in awhile and may want to explain.

I would assume that its so close to the actual post date that it was a accounting error.

The above is absolutely not true. The party who wrote the check is responsible for the funds that the check is written for no matter the date. Post dated checks are a courtesy between friendly parties...in most cases an agrement not to cash before so and so date. But in reality the check itself is a legal tender, a "marker" if you will for monies due.
The statute was changed in the late 90's where a bank does not have to honor a post dated check, unless the writer of the check notifies them much like a "stop" check payment. The bank is also not liable for any insufficient funds because of cashing of the check either.

Quote:
Post-dated Checks Statute Change
On August 1, 1996 the state Statutes regarding post-dated checks were changed. A bank may now pay a post-dated check before the date on the check unless the customer notifies the bank not to pay it.

The notice is similar to a stop payment order. The notice must reasonably describe the check and give the bank a reasonable opportunity to act on the notice. A bank may by agreement with its customers modify these terms
This is not so much to say deposit it before the 3rd..just that a post dated check doesnt really hold value any longer..but to be safe Id wait the days until the written date to be sure you protect yourself from any charges. Because even if after the date written on the check was honored, you really have no recourse to recoup the cash should tey be short.

don't worry i work with Island dollars a lot, they are in thailand shooting and doing biz so a US check prossesor does the checks and sometimes they send them early and the date on the check is wrong just wait til the 3rd it will cash fine i had 1 or two like that I will ask Marty to have the company look into it, because it does look strange. Basically it just got mailed too early, it is dated that way to prevent theft.

JustRobert,

I can understand the frustration. It sounds like the postal serivce was a bit too efficient this week

If you are located in California (from the signature) all our domestic checks are sent via online billpay, and checks is mailed and dated directly from the bank. I enter in the data and set them up for a delivery day. There are approximately delivery dates depending on which state the payment is going, and I believe California is listed as taking 5-7 days for delivery. This determines how the check is dated.

If it's a check for outside the United States, those I manually write and send then personally so it would have been a mistake on my end. For any issues with payment or Island Dollars, I'm always available so contact me directly anytime.

Sincerely,

Marty

Thanks Ghost for your input as well and no problems. Babymaker covered what I was looking for.

Looking at the check, Online Bill Pay is in Arizona which means sometimes I can get mail in two days

I've never had any real problems with post-dated checks. I usually deposit my checks through the ATM - I use Bank Of America. Anything under and up to $500 clears to my acct instantly but anything over that clears the next day and never once have I had them mention anything about a post dated check.

Guess it depends on your bank too.
