LL owners, how about some updated recips?

One of my biggest frustrations in creating free sites is trying to get all the recips looking right. Many LL’s have recips in 1990s-style HTML – you know, <table width=160> etc. Hoes, Adult-List, Smut Gremlins, etc. are in this category. Depending on the HTML version specified in the header, and the browser, these can display in all manner of perverse ways likely to get the FS rejected. A glance at the Smut Gremlins Rejection Thread shows a fair number of FS rejected due to “recip is way off.”

Quality browsers like Firefox and Netscape can usually render the recips correctly, but most of the world uses IE because it’s free, and it’s the buggiest piece of junk out there. It seems to take pride in screwing up the recips.

I’m coding my sites with XHTML and CSS, but can’t use XHMTL on the index page because of the old-style HTML recips. Sometimes the CSS styling interacts with the recips in weird ways.

Three possible solutions:

1. Use text links for all sites, but attractive recips are more eye-catching and distinctive, and I’d rather use them.

2. LL’s provide JPG or GIF recips, which even IE can’t mangle, with a category text link below (e.g. PenisBot).

3. LL’s provide updated recips with CSS styling embedded (e.g. Outlaws Porn).

I’d appreciate any comments on this. I did a search but didn’t find it’s been discussed before.

Thanks.

Why not make your own? A lot of webmasters do.

Agreed. Nobody will reject because of it, and it will probably make you look good in the eyes of most reviewers if you do a nice job.

You know, this is an interesting point because I've been thinking lately about pulling the style out of the recips listed on quickrecip.com because the linklists don't change their landing pages for their recips...at least I haven't seen any and I'd imagine that a prudent LL owner wouldn't because they'd lose everything they've done to build up their google ranking...I think about it all the time because recips that have images are a pain in the ass and some of the recips aren't styles right so they'll take up the whole screen if the table is that wide and then like the scrolling text on smutgremlins doesn't always place right...I don't know where I'm going with this other than to say I'm feeling your pain and I'm sure I'm not the only one...I think making my our own with our own style sounds like a pretty good idea....

You should be able to convert any 90's style html to plain css if you know css, whether you declare xhtml or 4.01 is irrelevant.

Though you might miss out on things like scrolling text, but that's a good thing yes?

OP here: Thanks for the replies--I've done it both ways: converted a malfunctioning table to JPEG, and another to CSS. To do that for 30-40 recips would take some time...I guess I was hoping the LL's would take it upon themselves to provide up-to-date styling for their recips.
