Server Blockage

One of my galleries was being bombarded with hits and the response time from the server from really slow if one was able to get in at all. My host told me that there were too many concurrent users trying to accesss the site at one time. They changed to number of concurrent users able to access the site from 75 to 125 which they said was the maximum.

What controls the number of concurrent visitor able to enter a site? Is it RAM on the server? Does 125 concurrent users sound like a reasonable amount to be able to access a site?

Sounds like you are on a real low BW shared server. 125 users in this business is a joke, try a few thousand as the norm for a decent day.

Lots of things can determine what your server can handle, but one of the main things is how big of a pipe is connecting your server to the internet. How much memory is also important and how fast the processor is. If you are on shared hosting then how many people are on your server and how much traffic they are getting will effect you as well.

Maybe it is time to get better hosting, check out the drop down menu in my tag and select M3 Server.

Hey Ingrid, err, Mark

Cleo is absolutely right (as usual!). With the kind of money you're making, you can easily afford a change of host now. You definitely need a host that is made for adult webmasters. I'm swapping 4 sites myself after I finish moving house and will probably go with M3 - then I can blame Cleo if they fuck up! If M3 aren't what you want, email me and I've got a couple others that aren't as good, but better than what you have now.

First of all keep in mind that your host does act as a moderator in a Shared/Virtual environment because a server only has so much in the way of resources. Those resources (RAM, Processor time, storage space) have to be shared between all of the clients.

Depending upon the host, when a client outgrows his allocated resources they could either look to increase the resource allocations with a larger plan or depending on the load size that the customer has grown to, begin discussions on a dedicated server.

Bottom line is get to a larger account or your own dedicated server as quickly as possible because if it is throttled down you will not have anyway of determining how much potential business you are losing or missing.

Hope that helps!
