Nobody knows that yet. Everyone with an interest in this topic is watching closely to see if the penalty spreads.

I personally have not seen verified cases of a penalty spreading recently, so my money is on it's being safe enough.

But it's a calculated risk.

How do you know if a site's banned? Is there a list - or do you look for certain indicators?

There's no list, you have to infer a banning.

First sign is a domain with a pagerank suddenly has no pagerank. You get either a zero or a grey bar.

Then, having made that sad discovery, you search for the domain url in google, and google gives you the dreaded "Your search did not return any documents", when you know that domain used to have dozens or hundreds (or, if you are an se spammer, tens of thousands) of pages listed.

This could still be some sort of glitch- so you wait a couple of months, and still no pagerank.

Then you know you are well and truly screwed.

Thanks for the info, Bill

But I'd presume there's a place where the ambulance-chasers congregate?

Also there is mention of consumptionjunction being banned.

http://consumptionjunction.com/

Not sure what they were before, but they are PR0 now. Seems strange that a site that doesn't appear to play any search engine games would get banned.

Someone said they thought it might be because they had the same title on every page.

Can't imagine you get banned because of same title on every page.

Consumption Junction banned? Now that is fucking fascinating, and a bit scary.

Jay, you know CJ as well as anyone here, do you have an opinion on this?

Payshots getting banned, now that is totally understandable, but CJ?!? I don't know much about how CJ was structured, but off the top of my head I can't imagine why it would get banned.

In any case, it seems very clear to me that google has started an adult hand review program, which could be very good news.

Or bad news if they start whacking without rhyme or reason.

Actually, I have done a lot to try and help those guys with their google problem. I do think a big problem is that the had 50000+ .asp pages that all have the same title, and with the content being pulled from a database looked identical, so it made Google thing they were trying to flood them with thousands of spam pages.

This has been going on for a long time. The one thing that is really a bummer is CJ has more non-reciped natural linking (people just linking it because they like it) than any other site I have seen.

I thought that was supposed to be the name of the game.

Is this an old penalty? When did this happen? (I get the impression from what you just said that this may have happened before this new google banning craze.)

Are the pages that similar when a human eye looks at them? I had the impression that CJ had a lot of unique text content.
