Image Size

I've been putting in the width and height of all my images and banners for a long time and wanted to know how important it is. I've omitted that info at times and don't see a difference. Is it REALLY necessary?

TIA

It makes all the difference in the world if your taking a 640x450 pic and putting it into 120x110 thumb table spot. If the size of the image unretouched is ok for the place its going... no prob but you have to specify the h and w when you need to fit it in somewhere. Also, an image or banner may look ok on the page in its default size until you upload and then look at the page in a browser. So the answer is you don't have to specify the size but you usually need to for final page placement anyways. Hope this helps

IMO an image should always be displayed at it's true size since images resized with HTML always look crappy. If your pic isn't the size you need it to be, edit with PS or other image editing SW.

And you still should enter the dimensions in the code since this will make the page load faster (at least that's what I was taught; your browser won't have to figure out the dimensions). I could be wrong about this last part, but not the crappy-looking part.

If the actual thumb is 100x150, is it still necessary to spell out the dimensions?

I've read that it would load the pages faster if it did have those on your img tags but I'm also thinking wouldn't it create a bigger file size on the page? I personally don't use it because I want to make my html page filesize as small as possible.

What is this 1996? You're worried about the extra weight of like 24 extra characters spattered a few times on your page. Kudos to you!

The original reason that it was suggested that you put in the pic size -- from my understanding (which BTW is so deep that it is deeper than the sea-floor travelled by the mantis - if you know that reference I'll send you a sticker!) -- is back in the day when pages loaded much slower then they do now the text would pop-up and then the images would load afterwards. The size of the image would go from 0 (unloaded) to the new demension, so suddenly all the text would start shifting around to make room for this new image that was just beginning to get loaded. If a coder put in the pic's demensions then the text would load in the correct place to begin with and pages wouldn't be shifting after the 4 minutes it took to finally load the hamster dance gif that you thought you were so clever for copying and placing on your home page.

Nowadays, your editors (and I'm not talking about GUI editors mind you) should automatically do this for you and if you are still building pages in notepad then I will also assume you are building your banners in MSPaint which makes you a winner.

</sarcasm>

Thanks for the tip. Can I use css to label the thumb dimensions?

<style>.thumb{width:170px; height:120px;}</style>

<img src="thumburl" class="thumb" />

So it can label the dimensions AND save some filesize?

Does Your host offer unusually little HD space or what? that little bit of space that code would add is absolutely nothing!

I have no idea about the css question

I guess it's a habit I grew up with when it comes to the image tags. It sounds silly so I'll break it.
