FORT LAUDERDALE
A man was in critical condition after he tried to kill himself by setting his house on fire Friday morning, police said.

The fire broke out at about 3 a.m. in the 700 block of Southwest 15 Avenue.

Three police officers were taken to Broward General Medical Center as a precaution after the man said he used unknown chemicals to start the blaze, police spokeswoman Detective Kathy Collins said.

The officers appear to be fine, she said.

Fire Rescue's hazardous materials team investigated the scene for chemicals, but their findings were negative, city spokesman Matt Little said.

Firefighters pulled the unidentified man out of the window, Collins said.

"He told officers, 'I want to kill myself,'" Collins said.

The man suffered smoke inhalation and some burns. He was taken to Broward General.

A large dog died in the fire, which is now out.

Arson investigators are on the scene. However, as of 7 a.m., they were waiting for the structure to cool down before entering.

Collins said the man, described in his 50s, set two fires in the house and also set fire to a vehicle in the driveway.

"He was very determined to burn the house down," Collins said.

At least one neighbor was evacuated as a precaution.

Good morning. Had a day from hell yesterday. Got slammed into first thing in the morning. Was merging onto this one freeway. The guy said he sneezed and when he looked up we were all stopped. So today I'll be dealing with that. Then later in the afternoon found out that my lady's brother got kicked out of rehab for using heroin again. We were just out there this past weekend to see him and he had been sober for close to two months. Lucky for us friends live out there and found him and picked him up and got him into a hospital/detox facility. Ugh.

Today will be better. Just for the fact it's Friday and I can have the normal reason for not working on projects. Even though I'm seriously behind. Oh well.
