Router Problems

I've got two pc's connect to a cable modem through a Linskys router. I just replaced one pc with a brand new one, and I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. I can connect to some sites, but most are slow, like in days. Anyone know anything that may cause this?

Thanks
SS

Have you tried resetting the router and cable modem by unpluging them?

Most newer computers are coming with trial versions of Norton Interenet security or Macaffe's version of a fire wall. That might be causing some sites to load slower than others. Also try looking around in your router... the ip should be 192.168.1.1 with default password of "admin" if it is a linksys.

Might also try checking the network settings, and possibly "repair this connection" or whatever the wizards name is in the control panel/my network places.

I tried all those. Reset both boxes, double checked the ip, and the repair connection works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't, which I find strange. The only firewall installed is the XP one, and I disabled that.

Still no luck.

I had that one time and thinking wtf and called my cable company and they said in my area there is a problem and after 2 days of them looking for the problem it was fixed and also ethernet cards go bad and act strange before going out all together and I allways have a extra one on had and funny windows says its working fine and also had a splitter go bad in my basement and had no connection at all and called my cable company and they said no problems so I took my cable modem to the basement and bypassed it and wham the light came on and if I wouldnt have done that they said it would be 4 days before they could check the line from the pole...

hope that helps

What happens when you do a traceroute?

The PC is most likely on DHCP.

Try setting it manually.
Set the PC's IP to 192.168.1.101
For the router/gateway tab set it to 192.168.1.1
You will need to log into your router to see what it is using for its DNS by opening a browser window and going to 192.168.1.1. Put this in your PC's DNS tab.

Then again I don't use a PC so I could be wrong. lol

OK, here's the deal. I had to "throttle back" the nic card. I'm not sure why, maybe it was using too much gas or it was smoking the tires or something.

Seriously, I think it has something to do with matching the maximum packet size that my connection can handle, or something like that.

Just in case anyone else has the same problem, you basically go to your network adapter settings in the device manager and look for something like "flow rate" and choose a slower setting. I had to use 10Mbps/half duplex. It made no difference in download speed as far as I can see. A few very helpful folks at Linksys support in India got me on the straight and narrow.

Thanks once again to all that helped. Cleo, I was really close to switching to a Mac, but I chickened out at the last minute.
